Aishath Sajiyaan Abdul Sattar commonly known as Yaana or as her Instagram name “regularpizza”, grew up always enjoying art as a part of her life. Thanking her amazing mother who has been supporting her from childhood till today, Yaana has been participating in art competitions from a very young age with several awards won. However, she started posting her artworks to public from 2016 onwards.
5 years ago, Yaana started her own joint art account “Alhiarts” with another brilliant artist to post their works better and she is best known for it as well. Mostly known as a painter of portraits, Yaana tries her best to incorporate art into all aspects of her everyday life which includes photography, baking and flying. As a creator, she works hard creating artworks that speaks both to her and the viewers.
Yaana have been recently incorporating putty into her artworks which she believes gives her artworks a better finish although her most used medium is acrylics. In 2017, she started experimenting in putty/texture work and has done a solo exhibition focused entirely on putty work at Gloria Jeans Coffee in 2019. She also fused putty work in her most recent paining at Unveiling Visons 2020, with a hand carved antique mirror frame including “hirigaa” patterns.
The portrait Yaana exhibited for Unveiling Visions 2020, which received the most vibrant artist of the exhibition in painting category, was a mixture of different features of old people in an attempt to create the face of the feeling “content”. The idea for the artwork was inspired by the emotion which she wanted herself to be in when she is old, so using her eyes in the painting made a great impact on the resemblance. Therefore, to have created a piece that perfectly captured the emotion, made her really love every bit of the artwork and it is going to be her most favorite and most cherished artwork as well.
The year 2020 was the most challenging and depressing year in her life till now, facing obstacles she never thought she would have to face but ironically the best memories in her art life at the same time. With wining the title of most vibrant artist of the year 2020 in Unveiling Vision, Yaana was overwhelmed by the loved received from everyone. The title and the painting played the biggest role in her art life of 2020.

Yaana believes that with the amount of time spent on a painting, it is not an enough source of income to depend on. Artists in Maldives are not appreciated enough and are underpaid. With getting quite a lot of commission works while being at Male, she faces hurdles with getting commissioned works while being at Addu for her training.
Art being a part of her life, Yaana likes to enjoy making art more than depending on it for a source income. Depending on it for an income would make it stressful as she would never want art to stress her out when it’s the best way to de-stress oneself. Yaana takes art as a passion rather than as a career because she already has a full-time career path of piloting even though she gets commissioned works Despite the fact that the love for art by the public is getting better day by day, Yaana believes that the most challenging factor being an artist in Maldives is depending on it for a sole source of income.
From an early stage of life, Yaana always loved the sky, the space and always wanted to go up there. Her dream was to become an astronaut, but it was highly unlikely to actually travel to the space even if you become an astronaut, so she chose the next best thing which is travelling in the skies hence piloting. With flying being the most amazing part of her life, she has no intention of stopping doing artworks as both defines who she really is. Trying to be active and making art with a busy schedule, Yaana believes that challenges are the best motivators to keep going forward.
Yaana strives to make remarkable artworks that helps her viewers treasure the true beauty and peace in art, with plenty of ideas in her head which are yet to be brought to life. MAC plays a huge role in her art life and thanks MAC for the opportunities and support provided, her wish for MAC is to keep inspiring and keep doing the amazing work MAC has been doing so far.
