Our ancestors lived in small, protected and beautiful islands. The price of living in such nice environment was that there simply wasn’t much in the way of resources. However, our fathers found ingenious ways to survive and their resourcefulness was second to none. Maldivians, even today, can tell you that the coconut tree alone is enough for the survival of a people as it can provide all the nutrients, building materials and everything in between. Imagine, our islands are not even big enough to support animals bigger than a cat. They never had to import food. Maldivians were seafarers and they brought ceramic for pottery, grinding stones to grind spices and metal to make cooking pots from neighboring countries. This simple lifestyle existed for thousands of years and it is gone now, in a blink of an eye compared to how long it had existed. Our parents lived it. Our children will not. It is our duty today to preserve the techniques used by our ancestors as it might come in handy in times of crisis.
